The Fluvanna Historical Society is recognized as a dynamic nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to engaging the community with accuracy, inclusivity, and honesty.

Goals, Objectives, Strategies and Metrics

Goal One: Strengthen organizational governance to advance and fulfill our mission. 

Objective One: Adjust the roles, membership, and procedures of the executive committee to support continuity of governance and succession planning

Objective Two: Create board meeting schedules, participation rules, and agendas more conducive to being an active and effective governing body

Strategy One: Through the direction of the Executive Board, develop a Board meeting schedule one year in advance

Strategy Two: Revise the by-laws by July 1, 2025 

Strategy Three: Through the Executive Board, reassess current board and committee structure and identify strategic recruitment needs and opportunities

Strategy Four: Create and implement board orientation and training program by December 31, 2024

Metrics:

Goal Two: Increase organization’s sustainability

Objective One: Establish Operating Fund biannual budget

Objective Two:: Take action to increase Society’s CACF and endowment funds

Strategy One: Increase grants application expertise through county government and/or University-based contact

Strategy Two: Investigate historic foundation funding opportunities

Objective Three: Create a Development Committee to plan and implement a multi-pronged annual development program. 

Strategy One: Establish Development Committee members by December 31, 2024

Objective Four: Expand organizational membership and corps of volunteers by 20% in two years

Goal Three: Curate the society’s holdings in an exemplary manner 

Objective One: Decide on a long-term approach for  archives management considering cost and staffing, the nature of our holdings and public accessibility goals

Strategy One:  Develop a phased implementation plan with estimated costs.

Strategy Two: Submit Application for CAP  grant.

Strategy Three: Find a new location for the current archival collection by December 31, 2025

Objective Two: Update the database management plan for archives and collections

Strategy One:  Conduct an artifacts inventory and visual conditions assessment and a control process

Strategy Two: Develop and implement accession and deaccession policies and procedures

Objective Three:  For real property owned or managed by the Society, historic or otherwise, conduct needs assessment, prioritize needs, and develop estimated costs.

Goal Four: Strengthen public outreach and educational programming

Objective One: Increase the organization’s visibility and collaborative work with stakeholders including educators, non-profit and civic organizations, and our partners in government.  

Strategy One: Create a Promotion & Publicity. 

Strategy Two: Create a Promotion & Publicity work group to develop and implement an outreach, media plan, and protocol for events, program activities, and promotion of the society’s work

Strategy Three: Increase the organization’s presence in public and home school systems

Strategy Four: Organize in partnership with DHR and others a free program of historic preservation training for county staff

Objective Two: Strengthen the Historical Society’s work and commitment in African American and in Monacan history

Strategy One: Develop an operating plan for these communities by December 31, 2024

Objective Three: Plan for consistent long term management of museum activities. 

Metrics:

  • Establish the Promotion & Publicity work group to create, plan for, and manage a schedule of public events and activities by June 2024
  • Develop and implement an outreach and media plan and protocol for events, program activities, and promotion of the society’s work by December 31, 2024
  • Develop an operating plan for African American and Tribal communities by December 31, 2024

Goal Five: Build, expand and sustain local community-led preservation efforts 

Objective One: Build and sustain effective and productive relationships within Fluvanna’s many communities. 

Strategy One: Conduct community-wide Open Houses to build relationships

Objective Two: Foster and support sustainable community-based heritage and preservation organizations.

Strategy One: Meet with the Lake Monticello Board/historical group and other groups  regarding land conservation and historical issues by December 31, 2024

Strategy Two: Host regional/statewide events and activities to foster relationships, training and to serve as a leader in historical and restoration efforts

Strategy Three:  Secure and administer grant funding for community based preservation projections  

Strategy Four:  Develop and publicize digital scanning of privately held 

documents to preserve a community archive

  • Host one community-wide event per year
